LUBBOCK, Texas (NEWS RELEASE) – The following is a news release from the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce:
The Lubbock Chamber of Commerce hosted a joint news conference along with community leaders and business organizations earlier today expressing its endorsement for the Lubbock County Transportation Road Improvement Program, Proposition A, on the May 4 ballot.
Lubbock-Cooper ISD Superintendent Keith Bryant, Frenship ISD Superintendent Michelle McCord and Lubbock ISD CFO Jeff Baum discussed the importance of Proposition A along with Lubbock Association of Realtors Board President Vanessa Dirks and West Texas Home Builders Board President Stewart Townsen.
“The Chamber and our business members are fortunate to have great partnerships with other business organizations in town who are willing to stand side by side with one collective voice when it comes to vital issues like these,” said Lubbock Chamber Chairman Abel Castro.
According to Lubbock County Commissioners Court, Lubbock is estimated to grow four percent for the next five years and three percent thereafter. As Lubbock continues to grow, traffic becomes more congested and roads start deteriorating more quickly, making road safety a number one priority.
Lubbock County consulted with state, regional, local and school district partners before the Commissioners Court unanimously approved a long-term Transportation Improvement Plan.
“Proposition A, covers the first phase of projects identified countywide, and many of these are projects that the Lubbock Chamber of Commerce Transportation Committee has been discussing for decades as needing to be addressed, most importantly from a safety standpoint,” said Castro.
If approved, funds will be solely dedicated to the program and can be implemented without raising the debt service portion of the tax rate.
