A Sweetwater man’s aggravated assault with a deadly weapon charge has been upgraded to a murder charge after a shooting in Sweetwater on Sunday.

Chief Brian Frieda of the Sweetwater Police Department confirmed the information after an investigation into the shooting that took place on the 100 block of Fowler Street in Sweetwater.

There is no information yet on the exact cause of death for the victim, Brandon Abeita.

The death happened after an altercation took place at 11:45 a.m.

Brandon Abeita and Tanner Engle got into an altercation when Engle was trying to get Abeita into a vehicle.

Once both males were inside the vehicle, it swerved and hit a mailbox before coming to a halt on the curb.

Police are trying to determine if the victim was shot while in the vehicle or as soon as he got out.

Police Chief Brian Frieda confirmed Abeita was shot to death.

At this time it’s unclear how many shots were fired at the victim, but one is confirmed at this time.

The victim was transported to Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
