Eight people were killed and 44 were hospitalized Saturday after a charter bus left a south Texas highway and rolled over.

State Department of Public Safety spokesman Conrad Hein said the bus left Highway 83 in Webb County after the driver apparently lost control. The driver is believed to be among the injured, Hein said.

The bus originated in San Juan, Texas, near the U.S. border with Mexico, and was traveling to Eagle Pass, about 300 miles north, authorities said.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Laredo and Carrizo Springs.

A National Transportation Safety Board investigative team will arrive Sunday.
