A state agency is investigating a choking incident at an Abilene daycare in early July that led to a toddler’s death.
The child was at the Kids of Faith Learning Center when he choked on some food, the child’s mother says.
The child was transported to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth and ultimately died, according to the Abilene Police Department.
BigCountryHomepage.com worked closely with the family since the incident happened and, out of respect for the family during this tragic time, refrained from reporting the details until confirming an investigation.
The child’s mother expressed that she believes the incident was simply an accident, a sentiment represented in a statement released by the family.
“We understand that an unfortunate accident happened, but our day care family did everything in their power to save our baby. We do not place any blame on them and know that they are suffering along with us.”
The Abilene Police Department is not conducting a criminal investigation into the incident at this time, since the incident appears to be medical in nature, not criminal, Sgt. Lynn Beard with APD told BigCountryHomepage.com on July 10.
Texas Child Care Licensing is working to determine if any standards were violated that may have been a factor in the child’s death.
Marleigh Meisner with the Department of Family and Protective Services released the following statement.
“Child Care Licensing exists to help keep children safe when they are in care outside of their own home. Our job is to set and enforce minimum standards. We began an investigation on July 6th and we are also checking to see if any standards were violated that may have contributed to this tragic incident.”
A GoFundMe account has been set up to help financially assist the family. In their statement, the family extended gratitude to those who have supported them.
“We would like to thank all of our family and friends for the love and support they have provided us.”
