Friday morning, the two candidates for Lubbock City Council District 1 were at City Hall, each discussing their educational background and the campaign.

The two men who are in the runoff election are Frank Gutierrez and Juan Chadis.

Gutierrez held a news conference to discuss what he said were concerns that residents brought to him regarding Chadis’ education.

“Some concerned constituents in City Council District 1 have expressed doubt over the educational credentials of my opponent Juan Chadis,” Gutierrez said.

“Mr Chadis claims to have attended Lubbock High School and Texas Tech University,” Guiterrez said. “His claim implies that he is a graduate of both institutions and therefore has been awarded diplomas for completion of necessary coursework.”

Chadis responded to these claims by Gutierrez.  According to Chadis, there was a misunderstanding after a newspaper article after his campaign announcement that he had corrected.

“I clearly stated I had attended Texas Tech University and I emphasized attended, not graduated,” Chadis said.

“My opponent has drawn question into my high school education. I don’t understand why since I graduated with his sister,” Chadis said.

Election day for the runoff is on June 25, and early voting goes from June 13 to June 21.

“My campaign is about the promises made to the community as far as representing the interests of the tax payers not only of the City of Lubbock but especially of the residents and taxpayers of District 1,” Gutierrez said. “Those are the folks that I intend to wholeheartedly represent to the best of my ability. “

“I will be listening to the people in District 1 and representing them,” Chadis said. “I will maintain an open door policy, economic development for all of District 1, and crime prevention, and overall, a better Lubbock.”
