City Council took a trip to different city departments to hear their proposals for the city’s budget.

Mayor Dan Pope lead the tour to four Lubbock landmarks where several departments spoke to the entire council about their needs and requests.

“It’s learning where our operations are,” Pope said. “How we’re investing our citizens money progress of our projects. How our daily operations work.”

Pope said this is an opportunity for the council to get out of City Hall and into the facilities they are making decisions on.

“Think about investments we’re going to make, it’s a very opportune time to get out and understand a little bit more about the specifics of that,” Pope said.

He also mentioned that this is a way for Lubbock residents to actually see where their tax dollars are going.

New city council member for District 2 Shelia Patterson-Harris said this trip was huge for her agenda moving forward.

“There are a lot of other departments, so I know there are a lot of other buildings and things like that that the cities responsible for. One of the other things I requested is to make my way to all of the parks that the city actually cares for. I didn’t know that we had so many, but I’d like to see each of those. I’d like to see the actual animal shelter. Not really been there before, so just really laying my eyes on some of those places to see how they function and kind of compare them and line them up  to the budget that was submitted to us the other day.”

Pope said the council will be meeting about once a week every week for the next couple of months to make improvements on the city budget.
