The City of Lubbock Health Department is honored to have been nominated for the 2017 South Plains Child Abuse Coalition’s Cherish the Children Award. This award honors individuals and entities making significant efforts towards reducing and preventing child abuse and neglect in our communities on the South Plains.

The South Plains Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention recognized the Department’s work in ensuring delivery of a variety of health and parent education materials to new parents as they are discharged from one of our Lubbock hospitals. Chairman Carla Olson described this work as “exceptional” and “far exceeding expectations” of the program design. Olson also noted that the distribution of Baby Boxes to ensure every newborn baby has a safe sleep environment has been unparalleled.

The South Plains Coalition for Child Abuse Prevention says the Health Department is ensuring that health and safety education is being provided to over 2,500 families annually and has opened doors in implementing a higher level of patient education across the community.

Previous Cherish the Children Award honorees have included Texas Tech University Chancellor Robert Duncan, Senator Charles Perry, State Representative John Frullo and Criminal District Attorney Matt Powell. For 2017, the honoree chosen is Dr. Patti Patterson with TTUHSC Deptartment of Pediatrics.
