The City of Lubbock is asking for contractors to mow weeds across the City in problem areas. With the warmer temperatures and rain expected, growing vegetation is a concern.

KLBK rode along with Codes Enforcement and encountered an abandoned property in Central Lubbock that has been given the standard 7 day notice.

If the owner does not take care of the property they’ll be fined a $150 administrative feed plus the fee for hiring a contractor to take care of the lawn.

Several former problem properties have already been taken care of by contractors, but more weeds are popping up.

The City is looking to hire contractors to mow and take care of the lawns that have weeds more than eight inches high. Call Codes Enforcement for details about working as a contractor for the City (806) 775-2111.

Stuart Walker with the City’s Codes Enforcement said this weeds season is especially important as mosquitos carrying dangerous diseases could affect the South Plains.

“The vegetation is kind of on our forefront this year especially with the word about Zika virus possibly spreading this far north,” said Walker. “We don’t want to have that habitat for insects or rodents so we want to get that cut down.”

The best way anyone can help the City is by calling the City’s Weeds Hotline, (806) 775-2290, with an address and details of the problem area. You can also report online via the City’s website.
