City of Midland Won’t Kill Prairie Dogs

After hearing several complaints from concerned residents about destroying the prairie dogs around Hogan Park, Midland city officials have decided against that approach.

Officials were concerned that the large holes the animals dig could pose a safety concern at this year’s Star Spangled Salute Fireworks Show.

The City of Midland considered the use of oxygen bombs in the burrows which would have suffocated the creatures.

Several concerned residents like Beth Armstrong of Lonestar Animal Sanctuary claimed the treatment is inhumane.

“This piece of land is sanctioned,” Armstrong said. “You’re not allowed to build property on it because it’s specifically for the prairie dogs.”

Armstrong says the best move would be to change the location of the fireworks.

“Move the fireworks to the stadium where it’s always been,” Armstrong said.

Amy Taylor was among the concerned residents.  She started a petition that gained the support of hundreds within the first hour.

“These animals are important to West Texas,” Taylor said. “Other species also live in the burrows.”

The city heard the concerns and then made a statement on Facebook.

“We want to make it clear that NO prairie dogs have been killed throughout this process, and brief efforts to eradicate them last week were unsuccessful. We will not be leveling any holes or mounds,” the city said.

Midland will post signs near the holes so people can avoid getting hurt by stepping into them.
