Beginning April 11th, San Angelo is officially in drought level one. This means that residents are only allowed to water outside once every seven days.
Watering is not permitted between the hours of 12 P.M. and 6 P.M.
During permitted hours, residents can only water up to a one-inch application across their lawns. Water runoff of more than 150 feet down a street is also prohibited.
According to James Flores, Assistant Director of Neighborhood and Family Services, breach of these ordinances are considered class C misdemeanors which could carry a fine of up to $500.00. Since October of 2015, the city has issued approximately 90 watering violations.
To enforce the ordinance, officials typically patrol targeted areas where excessive water usage is common.
However, they also recognize when the overuse is not intentional. Flores says, “We also take into consideration a busted sprinkler head, an issue the citizen could not control.”
If residents witness somebody violating any one of the drought level one ordinances, they are advised to call the city’s hotline at 325-277-8906.
