Lubbock city pools reopened their gates for the first day of summer early Tuesday afternoon.
Clapp, Mae Simmons, Maxey, and Montelongo all offer Splash passes, employment opportunities, and swim lessons. Individual prices and other information can be found online on Lubbock Parks and Recreational’s home page here.
One of the municipal pools, Clapp, required all of their lifeguards to go through a series of certification classes by American Cross, orientation courses, and were given daily training on how to clean the facility.
“We vacuum it and keep chemicals in the pool to shock it and keep bacteria out. We also clean the decks. We make sure the insides, the bathrooms are clean and also in the stands. We make sure the stands are clean as well,” five-year Clapp lifeguard Ruby Jane Johnson said.
Lubbock Parks and Recreation required rules for all of their facilities. Bathing suites must be worn at all times. If you wear a t-shirt to swim in, it must be white, “no logos.” All minors, 10 and younger, need to be accompanied by an adult. Finally, life jackets have to be coast guard approved.
“If you are in a little bit of a shallow and start to go under, just go under until your feet touch and then bounce back up and you’re going to be fine. And bounce back towards the shallow end. So that’s a lot of, definitely a big misconception kids have,” Johnson said.

City pools are open Tuesdays through Sundays, 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. General admission is $2.00 for youth 17 and older. Adults are $2.50 each.
