The City of Lubbock will reduce the speed limit along a portion of Marsha Sharp Freeway to 55 miles per hour.
The following is a statement issued by the city on Tuesday morning:
To help ensure the safety of drivers and construction crew members, the City of Lubbock and Texas Department of Transportation have lowered the speed limit on the Marsha Sharp Freeway (MSF) from 65 miles per hour to 55 miles per hour within work zones. The section of MSF not under construction between West Loop 289 and Milwaukee Avenue will also be lowered to 55 miles per hour so that the driving public experiences a consistent speed limit. This change will unify the speed limit already in place within various construction zones along the freeway.
Updated signage will be installed on Thursday, May 11th. The City thanks drivers for following the new speed limit and encourages drivers to use caution while traveling in work zones.
The following is a statement issued by the Lubbock office of TxDOT on Tuesday morning:
Starting this week, the speed limit along a segment of the Marsha Sharp Freeway (US 62/82) will be temporarily reduced to 55 mph. The reduced speed limit will impact freeway drivers from Quaker Avenue to Alcove Avenue. Signs for the new speed are scheduled to be installed starting Thursday, May 11.
“With two major projects in close proximity of each other, speed limits throughout the Marsha Sharp Freeway corridor fluctuated in and out of the work zones. The varying speeds made speed zones unclear to drivers,” said Michael Wittie, P.E., Texas Department of Transportation Lubbock Area engineer. “The adjusted, consistent speed limit will let drivers know exactly what speed to drive, while keeping traffic flowing through the construction zones.”
Drivers are urged to continue to take extra caution when entering work zones, watch out for slow moving construction equipment entering the work areas and to stay alert and minimize distractions such as cell phones.
Speed limits will return to their regular set speeds as construction on the various projects is completed.
