The City of Lubbock will spend up to $2 million for asbestos and mold abatement at Citizens Tower, 1208 14th Street. The city went out for bids last week and companies wishing to do the work have until June 15 to submit a proposal. The City Council will choose a contractor on July 9.
According to public records tens of thousands of square feet of carpet, drywall and ceiling tiles have been contaminated by mold.
The city purchased Citizens Tower, formerly known as the Omni Building, for $1.2 million in November of 2014. The building had fallen into disrepair so much so that tiles from the side of the 11-story building were crashing down onto the sidewalk.
Just last week the city approved a $4.9 million architectural contract for renovations. The plan is to move City Hall into Citizens Tower and move Lubbock Police into City Hall’s current location.
Once a contract is approved the city would like asbestos and mold removed within 308 days, but that time frame can be negotiated.
