Community Engagement Task Force to Host First Community Forum: “Let’s Talk”

In an effort to build relationships based on openness and trust, Mayor Dan Pope has convened the Community Engagement Task Force.

Comprised of elected officials, law enforcement, pastors, educators, business and other community leaders, this group will make recommendations to encourage collaboration between citizens, city government, and law enforcement.

Currently, the Community Engagement Task Force is meeting to organize a series of community forums. These forums will provide community members with the opportunity to share their comments and concerns about police and community relations. Information gathered from these forums will guide efforts to support and enhance community involvement within the City of Lubbock.

“Tragic violence in other cities prompted the need to organize this community conversation. Lubbock is a city with great people and a bright future. Nevertheless, providing the opportunity for our citizens to talk openly about police and community relations is important if we are to have positive relationships and trust among residents throughout our city. I hope these forums are well-attended,” Mayor Pope said.

“We need the community’s input; are we meeting your needs?  And we want citizens to trust us, to see that we act with integrity. We need dialogue to reach these goals,” Lubbock Police Chief Greg Stevens said.

The first community forum is scheduled for September 1, 2016 at the Lubbock High School Cafeteria from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Additional forums will be scheduled at a later date.
