In May 2015, voters approved a $14.4 million bond package in Slaton ISD. Since then, a bond oversight committee started meeting every few weeks as a way to bridge together the community and school leaders.
“We are parents, we are community members, as a good cross-section of the community that was put together for this oversight committee,” committee member Jim Taliaferro said.
“It’s a very open conversation, and that’s the way we want it, to ask any questions or give any comments you may have,” he added.
According to Slaton’s superintendent, $1.7 million has been spent so far on bond projects. Some of those projects include re-paving the high school parking lot, renovating the high school cafeteria, and updating the hallway lighting on number of campuses.
There are still a number of projects left to go, including the additional instructional space on each campus that will also double as tornado shelters and updates to the heating and cooling systems.
There are 17 people who serve on the committee and they will stay on the committee until the bond projects are complete.
“We’re a liaison to the board of trustees, but also, we’re an extra set of ears to the board of trustees, and we report about every eight weeks to the board, every other month, as to what we hear in the community,” he said.
