When folks across the state of Texas think about the South Plains, trees and greenery aren’t exactly the first things that come to mind. But theres people in Lubbock who want to change the nature of the conversation and it all starts with the planting of a single seed.
Aside from releasing oxygen and allowing us to breathe, Trees provide many benefits for the community. Adam Stovall with Tom’s Tree Place on 34th street said majority of trees in Lubbock were hand planted, and due to Lubbock’s dry and warm climate it’s important to keep them alive.
“I would recommend that every yard have a tree, every blank yard you see on these new blank houses are blank canvases and the sky is the limit with them,” Stovall said.
Students at Lubbock Christian University students, faculty and staff began planting trees across campus. They will finish planting all 60 of them on Friday for National Arbor Day. Senior Stephen Minchew said it feels good planting trees for future students.
“Trees give so much to us,”Minchew said. “It just kind of gives us some more beauty around this area because its just so flat you can see for miles so its just nice to see tall old trees around,”
