The Plains Cotton Grower Inc. held their 60th annual meeting at the Lubbock Memorial Civic Center on Friday afternoon. Congressman Mike Conaway, the House Agriculture Committee Chairman spoke about his push for getting cotton back into Title 1 as a covered commodity on the next farm bill.
On Thursday, it was announced that Congressman Conaway will replace Chairman Rep. Devin, Nunes, as the head of the House Intelligence Committee Investigation regarding Russia’s possible involvement in President Trump’s campaign and election.
“We are going to pursue it aggressively and expeditiously, we are going to follow every lead and get to conclusions,” Conaway said. “Mr. Trump won, that’s behind us, but what was going on? What were those influences, were they inappropriate?”
Congressman Jodey Arrington, also home for a two week recess from Washington said he stands in full support of Conaway as the head of the investigation. He also commends his efforts to get cotton back into Title 1, and the economic affect it will have on this region.
“I can’t think of a better guy to do it, he’s a non-partisan politician, he’s a problem solver, he’s a West Texan,” Arrington said. “Cotton is the number one issue for me, that is the number one issue for West Texas, in the last four years we have seen a decline in farm income that has been worst since the Great Depression.”
Both Arrington and Conaway vocalized their support for President Trump’s decision for an airstrike on the Syrian airbase.
“These are bad actors, you can’t negotiate with them, they’re like bullies and the only way to deal with bullies is to punch them in the mouth,” said Arrington. “We aren’t going to let you take advantage of the weak and the helpless, those were kids, those were kids and women who suffocated and died because of their leader.”
