Construction on 34th Street has been going on since 2012, and it’s not done, just yet. The City said the construction from Indiana Avenue to Memphis Avenue is now focused on the middle lanes.
In 2012, construction began on a two mile stretch of 34th St. from Avenue Q to Indiana after voters approved the project in a 2009 bond election.
Neil Welch, Assistant Engineer for the City of Lubbock, said the work from Indiana to Quaker started in 2014, and may not be done for a few more months.
The work has transitioned to the middle lanes of the road.
“We’re currently working on the middle section, we’ll move to the south section after the middle section is complete,” Welch said.
The project not only includes paving the roads again, but also improving and updating the sidewalks and lighting along the street.
“The City of Lubbock as a whole, we’re trying to focus more on pedestrian and bicycle traffic and be more pedestrian friendly, we’re trying to enhance that pedestrian way,” Welch said.
Holly Hop Ice Cream is located in a shopping center near the 34th and Indiana intersection. Owner Darryl Holland said the construction crews and the City have been very good about meeting with business owners to keep them informed of the changes along the roadway.
“We’re really excited about it, and all the merchants seem to be excited, and we’ve seen what it’s done for other segments, so we’re excited and think it’s going to be a real boom for business,” Holland said.
Welch said all the construction on this phase from Indiana to Quaker could be done sometime in the summer.
