Residents in Southwest Lubbock may see more construction trash as the city continues to expand. The city wants to remind residents that if the trash blows into your yard or onto your land, it becomes your responsibility.
“If it ends up on your property you as the property owner are responsible to remove it. Technically whoever’s property it ends up on is responsible for picking up it and disposing of it properly,” said Stuart Walker, the Code Administration Director for The City of Lubbock.
Dan Wilson, President and Owner of Dan Wilson Homes said his company takes specific steps to keep up with trash from the beginning of the project until the end.
“We have different schedules for when we clean up. On residential construction we have a total of 5-6 stages of cleaning while we’re constructing it, for us it’s always worked better that at certain intervals of construction we do cleanup,” said Wilson.
The extra steps involved with trash cleanup do cost extra, but Wilson said it is worth it.
“It costs us a little more money but at the same time if we’re building in a subdivision we feel a need to be good stewards of those neighbors and to be good neighbors,” said Wilson.
Walker said if you are having an issue with construction trash in your area to contact the city to help resolve the issue.
“We usually try and get the two parties together. We want the property owner in communication with the builders to help to get them to come to a resolution,” said Walker.
