The Lubbock County Commissioners announced their support of a project that would connect the panhandle to the Mexican border.
“It would extend I-27 from Amarillo all the way down past I-10 connecting to the Texas and Mexico border,” said Precinct 1 Commissioner Bill McCay.
The project was one of many that was brought up in a work session this week.
“We had good discussion, we had a good work session, had a lot of great folks from TXDOT to come in and help us understand our role and where we fit in and what our responsibilities are,” McCay explained.
In addition to expanding I-27, an Outer Loop proposal was discussed that would involve connecting portions of south Lubbock County into the major thoroughfare.
“It’s incredible the amount of traffic that’s currently traveling 1585, and to see that increase in traffic, and with new subdivisions on the drawing board, that are going to be popping up in no time,” said McCay.
Woodrow Road could also lose its status as a State Highway, which offers questions about future funding and maintenance.
“Lubbock continues to grow, which is a good challenge to have, to meet that growth demand,” McCay stated. “Just think back and imagine if we didn’t have the South Loop, if we didn’t have Loop 289. We have a much better transportation system because leadership in the past planned on the Loop and I-27 and Marsha Sharp (Freeway).”
“It’s a long process but it’ll be worth it,” McCay said of the projects in the works.
