A search warrant has revealed more information about what happened when a newborn was murdered during an at-home birth in Abilene on Monday.

Detectives removed several pieces of evidence from the home on the 400 block of South 25th Street including human remains, slip joint, a sock, blood swabs, a trash can with blood evidence, clothing with tissues and blood evidence, a knife, scissors, a book, a mattress, sheets, a laptop, a cell phone, and a mop head.

Detectives arrived on scene after Hendrick Medical Center staff reported doctors examined a woman who had just given birth, but there was no baby with her when she checked into the hospital.

The documents say it “quickly became apparent a crime had occurred there.” Officers observed a bloody knife, sheet, towel, and sock.

Detectives interviewed the mother, 18, who “admitted. . . that she gave birth to a baby, and after the birth she tired to flush the baby down the toilet,” according to the documents.

The OB/GYN who examined the mother at the hospital reported he determined the mother had given birth to a baby that weighed at least six pounds.

Abilene Police already arrested Damian Scott Cate, 22, in connection to this crime He’s charged with 1st Degree Murder and Tampering/Fabricating Physical Evidence with intent to Impair a Human Corpse just hours after the discovery was made and is being held in the Taylor County Jail on bonds totaling $300,000.

Cate claims he was aware of the birth but doesn’t know what happened to the baby afterward, according to the documents.

The documents suggest other family members may have involved in the birth and/or subsequent crime.
