School is out for the summer and that means it is heating up outside. In tonight’s Covenant Children’s Report we talk to Dr. Ron Skaria, who is a Primary Sports Medicine Doctor with Covenant. He tells us there are three levels of heat related injuries.
Mild is the Heat Cramps and Dr. Skaria says that you must drink a lot of water and rest and that it will take a couple of days to get better.
Moderate is Heat Exhaustion…you need to get out of the sun and go someplace cool and stay hydrated.
Severe level heat injury is Heat Stroke. This could cause death if you don’t get help immediately. Rub them down with cool rags, and put ice packs on the neck, under the armpits and in the groin. Then call 9-1-1 and get help for them.
Always remember to NEVER leave a child in the car alone and note that Tylenol and Ibuprofen do nothing against the fever in heat injury cases.
