The 27th annual Mayors’ Beans and Cornbread Luncheon is right around the corner.

This year’s event is from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on March 4th at the Lubbock Civic Center.

Mayors from around the South Plains come together to serve good food for a good cause.

“Events like beans and cornbread help us give the community an outlet to support us but the money that’s raised helps us provide that unfunded care or that charity care for the patients of not only Lubbock County but the 18 surrounding counties that we serve,” said Dr. Jeremy L. Brown.

Brown is the medical director at Hospice of Lubbock which is the only hospice in the region that cares for pediatric patients.

“The main difference with kids is that they tend to be a little bit more fragile than adults,” said Dr. Brown. “Certainly they can’t speak for themselves a lot of the time. We take care of a lot of chronically ill children with cerebral palsy that can’t advocate for themselves.”

It’s a specialized care that Dr. Brown says better fits his medical training.

“As a pediatrician, I learned very early that moms and dads know their children better than I’m ever going to,” said Dr. Brown. “We have a fairly focused team here at Hospice (of Lubbock) that we kind of pull away and specialize our care towards our pediatric patients because it’s such a dynamic relationship that requires a lot of specialized attention and TLC.”

Tickets for this year’s Mayors’ Beans and Cornbread Luncheon are $10 at the door.
