Covenant Health and the Lubbock Methodist Hospital System Board present The Michael E. DeBakey, M.D. Distinguished Lectureship Series. This year’s program features Dr. Bernard Harris Jr., astronaut and president of the Harris Foundation, speaking on “Space Adaptation Syndrome: Impact on Walking in Space.” The event is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. April 29 at Lubbock Country Club, 3400 Mesa Rd. Doors open at 7 p.m.

The DeBakey Distinguished Lecture Series was initiated in 2004 by Dr. Robert Salem, who had studied and trained under Dr. Michael DeBakey. DeBakey was the inaugural speaker for the series. The series has brought to West Texas more than a dozen well-known names in heart and cardiac medicine.
Harris served on the first flight of the joint Russian-American space program becoming the “First African American to walk in Space.” A veteran astronaut for more than19 years, he has logged more than 438 hours and traveled over 7.2 million miles in space. He is founder and president of the Harris Foundation, a non-profit organization that supports math/science education and crime prevention programs for America’s youth. As a native Texan, he did his undergraduate work and MBA at the University of Houston. He completed his medical degree from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine.
Following completion of residency in internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic, he entered the NASA program. Harris’ goals in life have been achieved through self-empowerment and self-determination. He believes that education and effort will allow anyone to meet any challenge in life, inspiring others to reach for the stars.
Harris is currently CEO and managing partner of Vesalius Ventures Inc., a venture capital firm, that invests in early- to mid-stage health care technologies and companies.
\He also is the recipient of numerous awards, including honorary doctorates from Stony Brook University (SUNY), Morehouse School of Medicine, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) and the University of Hartford, as well as the NASA Space Flight Medal, a NASA Award of Merit, a fellow of the American College of Physicians, and the 2000 Horatio Alger Award.
