Covenant Heartbeat : Fit 4 Fun Kid’s Triathlon

Covenant Health and Texas Tech are teaming up for the Fit 4 Fun Kid’s Triathlon once again this year.

The event is part of a bigger program called the Covenant BodyMind Initiative.

“It’s a fun event and a fun way to help kids stay healthy and focused on exercise during the summer,” Tavia Hatfield with the Covenant BodyMind Initiative said.

The partnership between Covenant and Texas Tech started about 8 years ago, when the two groups realized they were working on the same goal : a wellness program for kids.

“Both entities kind of saw a need for health and wellness programs and more intervention with our youth,” Hatfield said.

Hatfield said it’s a program aimed at a bigger picture.

“Not just the obesity and the eating and the nutrition, which is definitely a piece of it, but also about resiliency and self-worth and self-love and so the program actually starts with working on building these children up, giving them a feeling of worth, giving them a reason to want to do better,” Hatfield said.

During the summer months, one of the events in the program is a triathlon for kids.

“I think that triathlons are a lifetime sport, and when we get children involved in things they can do throughout their life, whether that’s swimming, running, riding, doing that individually or together, we improve, increase what they can do as an adult,” Betty Blanton said.

Blanton is the Associate Director of Recreational Sports at Texas Tech.

“This is a family event,” Blanton said. “You can’t just tell your child to run a mile, so the great part about this is families have to get involved, they all have to become physically active, they all have to think a little about their nutrition we hope that families learn a little bit about physical activity and nutrition in this program.”

The triathlon is on Saturday, July 16 and the last day to register and pick up your packet is Friday, July 15.
