June is national Alzheimer’s and Brain Health Awareness month.
“Brain is one of the most important organs in the body,” Dr. K.J. Oommen said. “Pretty much brain directs the rest of the body to do what it does.”
Dr. Oommen is a neurologist at Covenant and said it’s important to keep your brain healthy.
“Brain health, thus, is one of the most important health aspects that we have to pay attention to,” he said.
In order to do that, he said it’s about making sure you take care of your overall health.
Along with brain health comes awareness of Alzheimer’s disease.
“Alzheimer’s is one of the most common, or the number one cause of dementing illnesses,” Dr. Oommen said.
“We known there are at least 5.5 million Americans with Alzheimer’s disease in 2017,” he said, noting that .2 million of those are under the age of 65.
