The Dallas Cowboys’ current kicker situation, for many, is far from a sure thing. Former MLS and USFL star Brandon Aubrey is the sole kicker on the Dallas roster after Tristan Vizcaino was cut, and has been up-and-down throughout training camp.
While he has had good moments, most Cowboys fans still get that pit in their stomach when an extra point or field goal needs to be made.
But what does special-teams coordinator John “Bones” Fassel see in his sole kicker?
“I’ve seen growing confidence in the operation, and he’s really shown great professional attributes as far as preparation, his plan, his work ethic, and then obviously his talent,” Fassel said. “I’m excited about these next couple of games and seeing what he’s got, because I think he’s got some game.”
Aubrey had a decent enough debut against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Game 1 of the Cowboys’ preseason schedule.
He would make a PAT and then a 29-yard field goal to ease the collective nerves for Cowboy Nation, but in the fourth quarter, he missed an extra point after Deuce Vaughn broke free for a touchdown. Aubrey did then get himself back on track as he made his last extra-point attempt.
But are his efforts enough to ease the worry about the kicker situation for team owner Jerry Jones?
“We’re comfortable,” Jones said on August 8. “We’re excited about what we’ve seen. We’re excited about how he got here, and he’s having a real solid camp. So, we’re very comfortable going into the season with him.”
There are still several veterans sitting at home on the couch who could be seen as upgrades with Mason Crosby, Robbie Gould, and Ryan Succup all still available … and except for the price tag, they would likely make Jerry “comfortable” too. But as of now, Dallas seems content with Aubrey as its kicker.
Of course, there are still two preseason games to either solidify or increase the doubts surrounding Aubrey and for the Cowboys, getting a reliable kicker could be one of the most important pieces of business they do this offseason.
Is it Aubrey? Jerry thinks so, but Cowboy Nation still remains skeptical as a Saturday night preseason test at Seattle awaits.
