The Hockley County Sheriff’s Department released a brief statement Tuesday morning about a “scanning device” found on a gas pump in Ropesville.

The HCSO said the device was located on Friday in the 100 block of Arnett Avenue.

“Video evidence was identified and a report was taken,” HCSO said.  “It has not been determined if anyone used that gas pump after the scanner was placed.”

Hockley County Sheriff Ray Scifres told EverythingLubbock.com by phone that surveillance video might be ready for release to the public on Wednesday.

Scifres said if it is later confirmed to be a scanning device then it would be the first time he has heard of such a thing in Hockley County.

The devices are sometimes called skimming devices or card skimmers.  They skim a card number when payment is made by swiping a credit card.  The skimming device sends the card number to someone who is not authorized to use the card.
