A Clovis couple was killed late Saturday evening after being struck by a train at a Curry County railroad crossing.
According to the Curry County Sheriff’s Office, the accident occurred at 10:40 p.m. just off U.S. Highway 60/84 on Curry County Road U.
Sheriff’s deputies said the couple drove across the railroad tracks, backed up and then parked on the tracks in front of an oncoming train.
The train operators told authorities one person got out of the vehicle on the passenger side and stood beside the vehicle until they were hit.
The Clovis News Journal identified the victims as Jason Cassady, 36, and Rosann Lopez, 40. Cassady was killed at the accident scene. Lopez died while being airlifted to a Lubbock hospital.
Curry County Sheriff Wesley Waller told the newspaper no suicide note was found at the scene and there was no evidence indicating anyone was forced to be on the tracks.
The accident remains under investigation.
