The Associated Press said Monday morning that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein was expecting to be fired.  He was called Monday to the White House after he made critical comments about Trump.

For a time, media outlets including Axios, said Rosenstein would quit rather than be fired.

But after news broke, the White House released new information.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said in a statement, “At the request of Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, he and President Trump had an extended conversation to discuss the recent news stories.”

The two will meet Thursday when Trump returns to Washington.

According to the AP, there were reports Friday that Rosenstein floated the idea of secretly recording President Donald Trump last year and raised the idea of using the 25th Amendment to remove Trump as unfit for office.

Rosenstein denied reports that he spoke against Trump that way.

* UPDATE: Based on initial media reports, the original headline and text of this story indicated that one way or another Rosenstein would be out. Based on new information from the White House, the story has been updated.
