A Lamesa woman said her dog was mistreated and died in quarantine after it scratched a nurse who cares for the woman’s 90-year-old mother.

Brenda Lusk claimed an animal services officer didn’t care for her dog of eight years, Brittany, while the animal was under a 10-day quarantine.

Brittany was caught up on all her shots, I have the paperwork to prove that,” said Lusk. “She was in perfect health. She was my baby, my love of my life.”

After word spread over Facebook, over 300 people signed an online petition to have the animal services officer removed from his position.

“The facts do not align with what is presented on Facebook,” said Shawna Burkhart, Lamesa’s City Manager. “The individual in question was not on duty during the day the dog was picked up.”

Neighbors said the dog always seemed friendly.

“It was very healthy, high-spirited,” said Victor Taylor. “Very, people oriented dog.”

Lusk’s son-in-law, Scott David, called the family’s situation “a nightmare.” He said the animal services officer “acts like he’s mafia.”

The family said it appreciated of all of the support they have received over this incident.

“Amazing that the community is coming together,” said David.

“My duty to Brittany is to complain, and let them know I don’t believe she was taken care of properly,” said Lusk. “She was my love, I loved that dog. I just want to know why Brittany died.”
