Donations have poured in to help Lubbock Police Officer Corey Owens who suffered serious injuries after he was struck by a vehicle while directing traffic in the early morning hours of May 30.
Just one day after a GoFundMe account was set up to raise money for the officer’s family, as of 5 p.m. [Monday], officers, family, and friends have donated $14,385, bringing them very close to their goal of $15,000.
“The family is overwhelmed by the generosity of the Lubbock community. They are surprised and humbled by the outpouring of support. They are especially grateful to their immediate family and friends, their “Blue” family, the Police Department, the Lubbock Professional Police Association, the Police Wives Group and many more who are surrounding them with love and prayers now.”
“Officer Owens is currently in stable condition and is recovering as well as can be expected up to this point. Right now the family asks that the community continue to pray for them as they have a whole new life ahead of them. They are currently focusing on their family during this trying time and concentrating on what Officer Owens wants, and that is to get back where he wants to be, playing with his boys!”
As much as the GoFundMe account is appreciated, it will be shut down at 8 a.m. in the morning. The reason for the change is that the GoFundMe website takes a percentage of the donations and we want all donated money to go directly to the Owens Family. Any additional donations can be dropped off or mailed to any Peoples Bank Locations around the area with the ATTN. to the Ofc. Corey Owens Fund.
As well as private donations, the Twisted Root Burger Co. has set up a donation day where they will donate 20% of their proceeds for the day on Tuesday, June 9th if you mention that you are there to support Officer Owens. The Lubbock Professional Police Association appreciates the support of Lubbock, Colorado City, and other surrounding communities, our Police Wives, Peoples Bank Texas, and the management of Twisted Root Burgers, and all of the total strangers who have come from all around offering their generosity towards the Owens Family.
Owens was injured Saturday morning while directing traffic around a flooded road in Lubbock. He had positioned his marked police vehicle in the westbound lanes of 4th Street with the emergency light activated. A drunk driver then struck Owen’s vehicle causing it to collide with him. Owens sustained serious injuries and was transported to University Medical Center. He is currently in stable condition.
The Lubbock Professional Police Association represents 328 Lubbock Police Officers.
