DPS said at 5:00 a.m. a Chevy Suburban was traveling eastbound on F.M. 213 seven miles south east of U.S. Highway 87.

“The vehicle lost control on the right overcorrected to left, came back to the right, and left the roadway into a steep embankment of the barrow-ditch,” DPS said.

The vehicle rolled into a field and ejected a passenger identified as Katherine Colon, 23, of Tahoka.

“She was the front seat passenger and was not wearing a seatbelt and was pronounced deceased at scene,” DPS said.

The driver, Erika Chavarria, 26, also of Tahoka was not injured.

“Another female passenger in the back seat, along with a 2 year child also in the back seat were transported to the hospital in Tahoka, with non-incapacitating injuries,” DPS said.

DPS also said alcohol is believed to be a factor in the crash.

“Chavaria was arrested by State Troopers at the scene for intoxication manslaughter,” DPS said.

The investigation is still ongoing.

Note: DPS spelled the arrestee’s last name as Chavaria, and Lynn County jail records listed her name as Chavarria.
