Driver Arrested, Ramming Other Driver, Dispute Along S. Loop

Lubbock Police on Thursday evening arrested Jonathan Fernandez, 20, of Lubbock and a juvenile for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after a dispute between motorists along the South Loop access road.

A man and woman flagged down police in the 6600 block of Quaker Avenue.  They said they were at South Loop and University trying to get onto the loop westbound.  That’s when someone pulled along side and “appeared to be blocking her from accessing the on ramp.”

A police report said the woman managed to get onto the loop anyway and then the other car pulled along side and a passenger threw a beer bottle at the victim’s car.  The bottle shattered but did no damage to the victim’s car.

The victim got off the loop at Quaker Avenue trying to get away from the other car.  She turned onto a residential street and began to head back toward the loop.  The other car sped up and rammed her car on the driver side.

She kept driving in an attempt to get away and the other car caught up rammed her car again — this time on the passenger side.

She kept driving until she found a police officer.  Police later located Fernandez who told police he was the victim and she was the assailant.  Police weren’t buying it.

“I observed [Fernandez’] and [the juvenile’s] story to be inconsistent with the amount of damage located on the listed [suspect] vehicle and the listed [victim] vehicle.”

The police report never mentioned the term “road rage” nor did it provide a motive for Fernandez to ram the other car twice.

A police report said the man and woman had just dropped off their children at a movie theater in the minutes before this incident.

Fernandez was held Friday in lieu of a $25,000 bond.
