A man fell asleep at the wheel along Interstate 27 on the northern edge of Abernathy — causing a three-vehicle crash, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
DPS said the accident happened just before 3:00 p.m. Monday. DPS said a man driving an SUV southbound rear-ended another SUV which was also going southbound.
According to DPS, the man’s SUV then crossed the median and hit a pickup truck in the northbound lanes.
An elderly couple in the other SUV suffered injuries that were not life-threatening, DPS said. The couple was expected to recover. The driver of the pickup was not injured, DPS said.
The driver who fell asleep was expected to face a possible citation or criminal charge. However, no charge or citation had been filed as of early Monday evening.
Names were not yet released.
