Driver Falls Asleep, Leaves Two Dead in Head-On Crash

A driver fell asleep at the wheel and caused a deadly head-on crash in Pecos County on Thursday afternoon, according to the Texas Department of Safety.

It happened about 4 miles north of Coyanosa on FM 1776, authorities said.


Duane Phillips, 82, and Sarah Phillips, 83, both of Alpine, died at the scene, according to DPS.

DPS said the driver who fell asleep at the wheel, Justin Clark, 31, of Fort Stockton, was transported to Medical Center Hospital in Odessa. Troopers said Clark swerved into oncoming traffic after falling asleep.
Clark was driving a Ford F-350. Duane and Sarah Phillips were traveling in a Toyota Camry.
