Troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety are investigating a crash involving one vehicle that sent the driver to the hospital on Friday afternoon.

DPS said the Toyota 4-Runner SUV was heading westbound on TX Highway 114, when it rolled just east of FM 2378.

“Apparently went off the road to the right shoulder, overcorrected to the left, causing the vehicle to go into a sideways skid,” said DPS Sergeant John Gonzalez.

“According to witnesses there was very high speed from this vehicle,” Gonzalez stated.

Troopers believe the SUV rolled approximately four times, Gonzalez added.

Gonzalez said the driver was wearing her seatbelt, and was not ejected from the vehicle.

DPS identified the driver as Jeannette Hernandez Ortega, 29, of Smyer. Gonzalez said she was transported to UMC by ambulance with “incapacitating injuries.”

UMC officials said Saturday her status was “upgraded from critical to serious, but stable.”

“Speed is probably going to be the biggest factor in this crash,” Gonzalez explained. “The vehicle took a pretty bad beating.”

West Carlisle Fire and EMS also responded to the crash, as well as TxDOT crews to help redirect traffic.

Gonzalez reminded drivers to be careful on the roadways.

“Be vigilant about your speed out here, there’s a lot of traffic,” he said, citing “college kids,” residences, businesses in the area.

DPS said the crash remained under investigation.
