Driver of Fire Truck Killed in Crash with 18-Wheeler

The Texas Department of Public Safety said one man died and two other men were injured when a fire truck and an 18-wheeler crashed 16 miles east of Mentone in Loving County.

DPS released information Thursday on the crash which happened Wednesday at 6:00 pm.


“A fire truck with emergency lights activated was traveling west on SH 302,” DPS said.  The 18-wheeler was going east on State Highway 302. 

“[The 18-wheeler] hydroplaned and lost control on the wet road and entered the westbound lane of SH 302,” DPS said. 

DPS said the driver of the fire truck, Coby Slaughter, 36, of Pyote, was pronounced dead at Winkler County Hospital in Kermit. 

The driver of the 18-wheeler, Fernando Chavez, 57, of El Paso, was taken to Winkler County Hospital with serious injuries as was a passenger in the fire truck, Gregory Rogers, 57, of Wink.

The speed limit along that section of State Highway 302 was 75 miles per hour.  Conditions were wet and rainy according to DPS.
