A man in a motorized wheelchair was killed Thursday morning when he was hit by a dump truck in Lufkin.

The victim was identified as James Rudolph Roy, Jr., 70.

According to police, Roy was headed back to his home on Atkinson Drive after shopping when the accident occurred. At around 8:30 a.m., a dump truck pulled out from a private drive and hit the victim near a Dollar General store.

“Mr. Roy was headed east on the shoulder as required by law,” officer Toby Stanaland said.

The driver of the truck was identified as Ronnie Eugene Grogan, 64, of Lufkin.  He was ticketed for failure to yield from a private drive.

Roy was seen talking to Lufkin Fire paramedics as they worked to get him in an ambulance. He later died at a local hospital.

A Dollar General employee who came to check on Roy called him a “sweet little man” who frequented the store.

“He came down this morning to let us know we wouldn’t see him for a few days so we wouldn’t worry about him,” she said.
