The Ector County Courthouse is facing issues due to pigeons and a honeycomb wall that’s making the building stink and unsanitary.

Officials brought up the recurring problem Monday at the commissioners court meeting, to consider proposed solutions of how to get rid of the birds for good.

“It’s bad timing with the economy, of course we are short handed as far as funds go,” Precinct 2’s Greg Simmons said.

Although untimely, it’s a frustrating situation they’re ready to resolve.

At Monday’s meeting, commissioners agreed to let Ector County Building Maintenance start taking bids on an indefinite solution.

Building Maintenance Director Octavio Carrillo says the most promising solution is a netting that would wrap around the inside of the honeycomb that covers the building.

“If we can avoid [the pigeons] from roosting in the honeycomb that will solve most of our problems with the birds and the problems they’ve caused for us,” he said.

Carrillo estimates that could cost the County anywhere from $80,000 to $100,000. Simmons doesn’t know the maximum amount they can offer to fund the project.

For the time being, maintenance workers come to the courthouse bi-weekly to spend about 2 hours cleaning the mess pigeons continue making.

This clean-up work will continue until there’s a permanent fix.

“We want to make sure the workplace that our employees work in, and the public comes to is as clean and safe as possible,” Simmons said.
