University Medical Center’s Nurses Educating on Illegal Drugs and Synthetics (NEIDS) gave presentations Tuesday at the Science Spectrum, educating the public on the dangers of synthetic drugs.

The presentation was sponsored by Allied Compliance Services and was open to the public, but also had invited members of local school districts and law enforcement.

NEIDS has been operating for six months now, ranging from giving presentations to schools, to testifying before the state legislature this past session.

“The continuing education that we provide updates people on what’s new and trending, it’s always going to be the same kind of synthetic, fake drug. It’s going to have a new package, a new name, a new trend,” Charlie Williams MSN, RN, said.

In attendance were some members of local groups, like Ropes ISD Police Officer Ron Rincones.

“I actually got a lot of great information, they’ve seen a lot of things that we’ve seen on the streets. But to think it’s not in your schools is to have your blinders on, and I like to be more proactive than reactive,” Rincones said.

They’re continuing to do these types of presentations and said they will speak to all kinds of groups, like students, parents, and law enforcement.

“We want people to understand that it is out there, that it is real, and that it’s not a big city problem, it’s a west Texas problem,” Kim Henry, BSN, RN with NEIDS said.
