LUBBOCK,TX- Friday the family of Texas Tech student, Janakae Sargent, who was killed by a drunk driver in 2006, placed a cross at the crash site Friday in Sargent’s honor.
Sargent’s mother, Kandi Sargent-Lowe, partnered with Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD) for the special ceremony. MADD representatives said the cross service is free and available for all victims of drunk driving accidents.
In November 2006, Sargent was killed after 48-year-old Irma Padilla ran a red light crashing after she had been drinking and driving. Sargent fought in the hospital for four days, but ultimately died from her injuries. Sargent donated her organs.
Eight years later, Sargent-Lowe said each day is still a battle for her family. She said it upset the family to know thousands of people passed the intersection each day, but had no idea of the tragedy.
Sargent-Lowe said she hopes people will see the cross and think twice about the decisions they make.
