There is a critical need for electricians on the high plains according to The Independent Electrical Contractors of the Panhandle.

The average age of an electrician is 58 and as the population ages, the number of skilled workers decreases.

Robert Chambers, a member of IEC and a local electrician, said part of the reason fewer young workers are entering the field is because they aren’t being encouraged to.

“They aren’t being directed in that way and told the opportunities and the benefits of being in a skilled trade. It is always something you can always fall back on and it is a good paying career and it is challenging,” said Chambers.

To help increase electricians in the workforce, the IEC is helping with an apprenticeship program.

“They are getting on the job training and they are getting in class training. They are getting their licenses first time without failing the tests,” added Chambers.

Through the program applicants work full time with a contractor and also attend school.

Chambers is hoping there will be more people interested so the industry is well staffed.

“There will always be a need for electrical workers and people to come into your home or your business and trouble shoot, fix, maintain and repair,” said Chambers.
