The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) [Thursday] held a dedication ceremony for a portion of U.S. Highway 287 newly designated in honor of DPS Trooper Bobby Steve Booth, who died in the line of duty in 1993. Trooper Booth’s family, DPS leadership, fellow troopers, county officials and members of the Stratford Lions Club attended the ceremony at the Sherman County Courthouse in Stratford.

The Trooper Bobby Steve Booth Memorial Highway, created by the 83rd Texas Legislature, consists of a section of U.S. Highway 287 north of Stratford that stretches to the Texas-Oklahoma border.

“The department is eternally proud and humbled by the selfless sacrifice Trooper Bobby Steve Booth made in order to serve his community. Trooper Booth was a man of great courage and his dedication to helping others will always be remembered,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “DPS is immensely grateful for the 83rd Texas Legislature and local leaders whose hard work made this memorial highway designation a reality.”

“For more than six years, Trooper Booth proudly and diligently served the citizens of Texas.  He was a man who took the DPS mission to heart, and his service to this department and the entire state will always be cherished,” said DPS Region 5 Commander Gary Albus. “The Trooper Bobby Steve Booth Memorial Highway will be a constant reminder of his courageous and unwavering service.”

Booth joined DPS in 1987 and was stationed in Stratford at the time of his death. Trooper Booth was shot and killed on June 16, 1993, while responding to a disturbance call at a roadside park. He was survived by a wife and two sons.
