Last Friday a tragic car accident on Interstate 27 killed a young Lubbock couple. The family of one of the crash victim’s said the 18-year-old teen’s decision to be an organ donor is saving many lives.
Mia Biera, 18, was in the car with her boyfriend Joseph Espinoza, 20, when police said Espinoza pulled over on the Interstate to change a flat tire.
“Mia was in the car and he was changing the tire that says something,” said Mia’s cousin Manuel Biera. “That he wasn’t a boy he was a man.”
Early Friday morning Espinoza and Biera were hit by a truck when they parked on the far right lane of I-27 to fix their tire. Witnesses on scene tried saving the young couple. However, it was too late for Espinoza and he died on scene.
“Eventually Mia would’ve probably ended up marrying this guy,” said Manuel.
Mia was pulled out of the fiery car by a Lubbock man. Mia’s aunt, Gina Biera, said her family is grateful that someone on scene tried to save the couple.
“And he didn’t have to do anything,” said Gina. “And he pulled out our babies for us, he did that for us and we got to have a little bit more time with Mia, even though it was tragic, we still got to touch her.”
Mia was taken to UMC where she later died, that’s when her family learned she was an organ donor.
“Mia is still affecting people even though she’s gone,” said Manuel.
Because Mia was an organ donor and due to the mystery man that jumped to rescue her, her family said that Mia’s organs will save eight lives.
“Whoever gets her heart, whoever it is, is going to love hot fries, I wouldn’t be surprised if they loved hot fries, ICEE’s and became really sarcastic,” Manuel said ending with a smile.
A viewing will be held Wednesday night for Mia at Lake Ridge Memorial. Her funeral will be Thursday morning.
Her family has set up a Go Fund Me page at: Mia Beria Memorial.
