Today, May 12th, was the deadline for local firework distributors to put in their request to sell for Memorial Day weekend. But the County Commissioner’s office said they haven’t heard much from sellers.

“We work closely with the firework stations locally, we discusses our weather conditions to see if we’re still in a drought. It costs them a lot of money to get all the fireworks in and setup and get the location and if the demand isn’t there they could probably lose money,” Bill McCay, a County Commissioner for Lubbock said.

Last year the state of Texas added three holidays to the fireworks calendar: Texas Independence Day, San Jacinto Day, and Memorial Day but the county has to approve of it first.

McCay said they’ve been talking with sellers but non have made the push to sell for this Memorial Day.

“Well I think for the longest time people get accustomed to the way things are done the 4th of July and New Years were the only times fireworks were legally sold, so they haven’t gotten into the habit of selling fireworks for Memorial Day,” Jinks White, a local seller said.
