A collaborative program between Covenant and Texas Tech that has been nationally recognized for their in school nutrition program is having their summer Fit 4 Fun event.

We talked with the three women who spearhead this program and event for children.

Linn Walker the Director of Covenant Body Mind Inititive, Tavia Hatfield, Covenant Body Mind Inititive, and Betty Blanton, Associate Director of Recreational Sports at Texas Tech work very hard each year to give kids and families activities to participate in.  Walker tells us, “We started curriculum 8 years ago that we implemented in school systems to look at wellness from a comprehensive approach.
Hatfield says, “the partnership between Covenant and Texas Tech through the Health Sciences department is run by Texas Tech but funded by Covenant so it has been a great partnership with us.

Walker goes on to say, “Covenant has been wonderful to us to allow us to handle this program in such a way that we really work with the kids and let them come up with their best definition of wellness for them. Hatfield explains the upcoming event.
“This summer the event we’re having the triathalon is one of the summer activites because this program primarily runs during the school year but we try to have some extra curricular events during the summer to keep the kids motivated and anybody can come to this children’s triathalon even if they’re not in the school where the program is implemented.”

“Fit 4 Fun Triathalon is July 16th and its a multi sport event- swim, bike, run event for ages 7-14. 7-10 swim 100 yards bike 2.4 miles and run 1 mile.  The 11-14 swim 200 yards, bike 3.2 miles and run a mile and a half”, says Blanton.  She goes on to tell us, “This is a family event, you can’t just tell your kid to go out and run a mile so the great part about this is families have to get involved.  They all have to become physically active they all have to think a little bit about their nutrition so we hope families learn a little bit about physical activity and nutrition in this program.”

If your child would like to participate, it’s $20 for the first child and $15 for each additional child in your family.  You can register online at http://recsports.ttu.edu or you can attend the Free workshop on Monday, July 11th.  They will go through the course.  Just call 806-742-3828 to register and find out where to meet.
