The national weather service issued a flash flood warning for Lubbock County until 4:45 pm Thursday.
The EverythingLubbock.com newsroom was told of numerous high water rescues including FM 179 and 2641, 2500 Avenue Q, Exit 6 of Interstate 27, North Avenue Q and Regis Street, Yucca Street at Interstate 27, and 66th Street at Interstate 27.
Five people were standing on top of a vehicle under water near 23rd Street and Avenue W about 3:00 pm. Lubbock Fire Rescue was sending a boat to rescue them.
Shallowater unofficially received more than 3 inches of rain in about one hour. Lubbock officially received 1.96 inches in a single hour as measured by the National Weather Service.
The Lubbock County Emergency Operations Center reported, “Several home in Shallowater have been flooded 6 to 12 inches of water in homes.”
Flooding was reported in areas such as the Marsha Sharp Freeway at University Avenue to the point where cars and trucks could not pass.
Interstate 27 main lanes were shut down at North Loop 289. FM 835, the main entrance road to Buffalo Springs Lake, was also closed. The 2800 block of Avenue Q was blocked due to high water.
Numerous power outages were reported from both lightning strikes and downed power lines. As of 2:26 pm, South Plains Electric Coop reported 652 homes or businesses without power. That number had been much higher earlier in the afternoon. Also as of 2:47 pm, Lubbock Power and Light reported 167 homes or businesses without power. Xcel had more than 50 homes or businesses without power in Whitface as of 2:52 pm.
So far no injuries have been reported.
The Buddy Holly Center has canceled Thursday night’s Summer Showcase concert in the Meadow’s Courtyard, and the Dance at Lubbock Senior Center has been canceled.
The Lubbock County Emergency Management Coordinator sent out this message at about 3:15 pm:
Received an Update from Michael Neighbors City of Shallowater Emergency Management Coordinator.
They have a minimum of 75 homes effected by flood waters with up to 2 feet of water in some homes.
They have made request to Lubbock County to coordinate temporary sheltering for any displaced citizens.
Lubbock County Emergency Management is coordinating with The South Plains Chapter of the American Red Cross to meet the shelter needs. Additional Details to Follow.
Additional rain is expected over the next few hours and we encourage citizens to stay at home if at all possible. If you live in a low lying you should seek shelter on higher ground.
A Disaster Declaration may be issued.
