On December 25 at about 6:00 pm, a Floydada police officer, along with deputies from the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office, responded to a residence on West Mississippi Street. The caller stated her husband, later identified as Ruben Guerra, was making threats of suicide and he had also started a fire inside the residence. When the officer arrived on scene, he realized the suspect had barricaded himself inside the house. After being given lawful consent to enter the house by force, the officer attempted to force the front door open but discovered something blocking it from opening. The officer and a deputy began to break the front window to gain entry to the residence.
After the window had been removed, the officer began to move the blinds out of the way when a blunt object struck the blinds where his hand was located. The officer and the deputy soon removed the blinds and found two pieces of furniture blocking the window as well. As the deputy began to step inside, Ruben Guerra lunged at him with a knife but he was not able to hurt the deputy. The officer then moved the furniture out of the way and the deputy was able to subdue Ruben with a Taser. Once Ruben was placed in handcuffs, the officer noticed the smell of smoke coming from the back of house. The Floydada Volunteer Fire Department was called to the scene to make sure the scene was safe.
Ruben Guerra was arrested and charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon on a Police Officer and Arson. Ruben was also evaluated by MHMR before being transported to jail.
