The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is set to resume work on a $3.8 million project that is making roadway improvements to more than five miles of FM 597 in Hockley and Lubbock counties, from FM 168 to 1.29 miles east of the Lubbock County line.

“The project was suspended during the winter months because of temperature restrictions. We’ve resumed worked to make needed improvements and repairs to the pavement, that will also enhance the overall safety of the roadway,” said Steve Perez, P.E, TxDOT Littlefield Area engineer.

Starting this week, motorists traveling on FM 597 will be detoured around the work zone through the duration of the project as contractor Gilvin-Terrell, LTD., of Amarillo, rebuilds and resurfaces the roadway; local traffic, however, will continue to have access to the roadway.

“Both east- and westbound through traffic will be detoured around the work zone via FM 179, FM 54 and FM 168,” Perez said. “We still want to caution motorists to watch out for workers and equipment in the area.”

The project’s completion date is scheduled for October 2016.
